My Bighorn Sheep Photography Experience

The best time to be out photographing Bighorn Sheep is in the winter when the rams are out looking for the ladies. I have watched in amazement as the rams chase the ewes around in their attempts to mate with them. Unfortunately for the rams, I never saw them having any success.

My bighorn sheep photography usually required me to be dressed for cold weather, many times well below zero. They didn't seem to mind, but I thought on a few occasions my face was going to freeze and fall off despite being dressed for it. Watching them suddenly turn and butt heads with each other was one of the coolest things I have experienced in my wildlife photography.

Facts About Bighorn Sheep

Bighorn sheep are stocky, climbing-hoofed mammals found in western North America and known for their massive curling horns. Some males can weigh up to 300 pounds and have horns averaging more than 3.3 feet long. Bighorns can live 20 years or more.

Bighorn lambs weigh 3–5 kg when born. Before the 1800s, there were two million bighorn sheep from Canada to northern Mexico but they were nearly driven to extinction by overhunting, habitat loss, and livestock diseases. Despite conservation measures, they have not significantly recovered.
