Facts About Bighorn Sheep
Bighorn sheep are stocky, climbing hoofed mammals found in western North America and known for their massive curling horns. Some males can weigh up to 300 pounds and have horns averaging more than 3.3 feet long. Bighorns can live 20 years or more.
Bighorn lambs weigh 3–5 kg when born. Before the 1800s, there were two million bighorn sheep from Canada to northern Mexico but they were nearly driven to extinction by overhunting, habitat loss, and livestock diseases. Despite conservation measures, they have not significantly recovered.
