My Personal Thoughts

Photographing a fox is just one of those things where you have to get lucky. There are no locations that I know of where they hang out on a regular basis. I was in Canada photographing polar bears and an arctic fox made an unexpected appearance. The same thing happened in Norway while photographing polar bears there.

Arctic fox photos, black fox photos and red fox photos require the photographer to be ready on a moment's notice. They all look best in their thick winter coats so that is the best time to look for them.

The Beauty of Furry Foxes

Photos of Foxes were one of the most elusive that I ever tried to capture as a wildlife photographer. Just like other animals, they look their best in the winter with their thicker coats. The white Arctic Fox captured here was from a winter trip to Canada to photograph polar bears.

I also came across them in Spitsbergen, Norway while there at the beginning of summer also on the hunt to photograph polar bears. One summer while in the San Juan Islands in search of Orca Whales, I came across a couple of black foxes. I didn't even know such existed.

Facts About Foxes

The name “fox” refers to the 10 or so species classified as “true” foxes (genus Vulpes), especially the red, or common, fox (V. vulpes). Red foxes are about 36–42 inches long with 14-16 inches of this being the tail. Red foxes weigh about 10-15 pounds. After a gestation period of seven or eight weeks, the female fox gives birth to 1–10 or more young (5 is average) and they are called pups.
