There aren't many good opportunities to capture red color in the Smokies, especially down low where it can be photographed. After several days of driving every road, I located this setting just prior to the entrance to Cades Cove. I never saw another setting of red color during my entire time there.
The cloudless skies required us to capture this image just as the sun was coming up to avoid bright spots from the sun on the leaves. The low light resulted in a 3 second exposure, but there was absolutely no breeze and no movement of the leaves, so it worked out perfectly.
