Facts About Herons

The heron is any of about 60 species of long-legged wading birds, classified in the family Ardeidae (order Ciconiiformes). They usually feed while wading quietly in the shallow waters of pools, marshes, and swamps. Herons usually stand with the neck bent in an S shape. Best known of the typical herons are the very large, long-legged and long-necked, plain-hued, crested members of the genus Ardea—especially the 50-inch great blue heron of North America with a wingspan of 6 feet or more.

These beautiful birds are found in a variety of shallow fresh and saltwater marshes. They feed on just about anything that is small and lives in the water, be it a fish, a crab, a tadpole, etc.

Photos of Great Blue Herons are probably the most common, as they are magnificent large birds. Also photographed and shown here are Tri-colored Herons, Little Blue Herons, Green Herons, Yellow-Crowned Night Herons, and Black Crowned Night Herons.
