Facts About Shore Birds

The gull is one of more than 40 species of heavily built web-footed seabirds of the gull and tern family Laridae (order Charadriiformes). The herring gull (L. argentatus) is by far the most familiar of the Atlantic gulls. It has a gray mantle, flesh-colored legs and feet, and black-and-white-spotted wing tips. Another shore bird, the sandpiper belongs to the family Scolopacidae (order Charadriiformes), which also includes the woodcocks and the snipes. They are about 6 to 12 inches long.

The Wide Variety of Shore Birds

We've all seen the wide variety of birds that hang out on the beaches or other areas near the ocean shore. Well, as a wildlife photographer I felt compelled to take my camera, lay on the sand, and photograph many of them up as close as I could.

Photos of Shore Birds in this Gallery were generally taken early in the morning while the light was soft. The birds include Willits, Gulls, Sandpipers, Sanderlings, Royal Terns, and a Northern Fulmar. One could spend a lifetime on the beach with these birds, but there is just too much else to photograph.
