I had managed a couple of hours of sleep and was awakened at 2:30 am by the sound of ice being broken by the hull of the ship. I knew I had to get up, get dressed in all the usual layers and get on deck as soon as possible. We were in the ice pack!
There were only a few of us that made it up to the deck in those wee hours but we were rewarded by this amazing sight of the ice pack under the early light of the sun. We made it through in about an hour, but the contrasts in shapes and colors is a memory captured in this photograph that I won't soon forget.
