Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse
Manteo, North Carolina
Carolina Coast Fine Art Photography
A Limited Edition, Fine Art photograph of the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse with a reflection of the lights of the in the water in North Carolina. Available as a Fine Art print, Metal print or Acrylic print.
There had been something about photographing this lighthouse at dusk that put it on my "had to do" list. While photographing the Carolina coastal area, I saw the forecast called for a calm evening with very little wind. This is what is needed to get the good reflection of the lights so I changed my plans and made the drive to Manteo on the Outer Banks.
Normally, clear skies are not my preference, but in this case they work to simplify the photograph. It was January and it was cold out by the lighthouse, but I soon forget about that knowing that I had captured the photograph I was looking for.
The Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse is one of the most iconic landmarks in North Carolina. It stands as a beacon, guiding ships to the safety of Hatteras Harbor. The lighthouse has seen many changes since its original construction in 1857. The present structure was built in 1964 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. You can find out more about this landmark with our brief history below!
The original tower was constructed in 1857. The original lighthouse was made of brick and stone, standing at 66 feet tall. The bricks were made by the slaves on the plantation nearby.
In 1887, a new cast-iron cylinder was constructed to replace the old tower. Then, in 1926, the lighthouse underwent a major renovation under President Calvin Coolidge's administration. In 1964, a new steel skeleton structure was completed to replace the brick and stone tower.
In 1983, the lighthouse underwent another major renovation that resulted in a brighter signal light and a fog signal that could be heard up to eight miles away. By 2011, this iconic landmark had been added to the National Register of Historic Places.
Today, you can visit the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse for guided tours if you're near Hatteras Island!
In addition to being a beacon for sailors, this lighthouse is a landmark for North Carolina. Visitors can see the lighthouse from the air and on land. The lighthouse is a great place to enjoy an evening picnic with family and friends, or to spend time with your children.
Visitors come from all over to learn more about Hatteras' oldest landmark. You can tour the lighthouse's museum or take in some of North Carolina's beautiful natural landscape at Roanoke Marshes Wildlife Refuge, just 500 yards from the lighthouse.
The Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse was originally constructed by Union troops in 1857. The original structure was repaired and added onto in 1894 by the United States Lighthouse Service and again in 1907 by President Theodore Roosevelt's Executive Order of 1907, culminating in the current structure we see today.
The lighthouse stands on the northern end of Bodie Island, near the town of Nags Head, North Carolina.
