My Monument Valley Photography Experience

I’ve photographed in Arizona and Utah quite a few times and a stop at Monument Valley was almost always on the agenda. The way the sunrise or sunset would light up the red rock formations was incredibly beautiful.

I learned that in April the Milky Way would arch over the entire valley at night. Fortunately, I was able to be there then with a good friend so I wouldn’t have to be out in the middle of the night alone. That always seems to be a little creepy.

Monument Valley Landscape Photography - Iconic Mittens and Red Rock

Monument Valley is a Navajo Tribal Park (30,000 acres) established in 1958. Today it is known for its breathtaking vistas and towering sandstone buttes that reach heights of up to 300 meters (1000 feet) and are colored red or blue-grey due to the different oxides they contain.

Monument Valley photographs are known to capture the raw beauty of the Monument Valley landscape featuring iconic photos of the buttes and red rocks including fine art photos of the Mittens as seen from Artist Point.

The Desert Southwest fine art photographs at sunrise and sunset with the warm, orange light of the low sun accentuating the red colors in the rocks help to create stunning Monument Valley fine art landscape photography that will warm up any room in your home.

Red Rock Country Makes Fine Art

The scenery of red rock country in Arizona and Utah is unlike anywhere else. The formations at Monument Valley, White Pocket, Canyon de Chelly, Horseshoe Bend, and others are almost hard to comprehend when you are standing there. The colors, shapes, light, and shadows are more than worthy of being part of a large Fine Art Print.

Visiting and Photographing Red Rock Country & Desert Southwest

In addition to the National Parks like Arches, Canyonlands and Zion, there are other areas of note. Monument Valley, Horseshoe Bend, Cathedral Rock in Sedona, Spider Rock in Canyon de Chelly, White Pocket, Shiprock, and the Slot Canyons are just a few of the other locations to photograph in the Red Rock Country of the Desert Southwest.

This area in Arizona and Utah is simply a must for anyone doing serious Landscape and Nature Photography. Satellite images clearly show the reddish coloration of these areas. It is difficult to comprehend the size of some of the rock formations because there may not be a nearby structure for scale, but if you can get close enough, they are awe-inspiring.

The Desert Southwest photographs at sunrise and sunset can be stunning with the warm, orange light of the low sun accentuating the red colors in the rocks. The beautiful Fall colors in the Cottonwood trees contrasted against the Red Rock are the reason to be there in November. The summer storms in August provide some very dramatic opportunities.
