Visiting and Photographing Red Rock Country & Desert Southwest
In addition to the National Parks like Arches, Canyonlands and Zion, there are other areas of note. Monument Valley, Horseshoe Bend, Cathedral Rock in Sedona, Spider Rock in Canyon de Chelly, White Pocket, Shiprock and the Slot Canyons are just a few of the other locations to photograph in the Red Rock Country of the Desert Southwest.
This area in Arizona and Utah is simply a must for anyone doing serious Landscape and Nature Photography. Satellite images clearly show the reddish coloration of these areas. It is difficult to comprehend the size of some of the rock formations because there may not be a nearby structure for scale, but if you can get close enough, they are awe inspiring.
The Desert Southwest photographs at sunrise and sunset can be stunning with the warm, orange light of the low sun accentuating the red colors in the rocks. The beautiful Fall colors in the Cottonwood trees contrasted against the Red Rock are the reason to be there in November. The summer storms in August provide some very dramatic opportunities.
