A Fall Color Photography Experience

I made two separate trips to West Virginia plus an extended ten day trip to New Hampshire to photograph fall colors. The scenes were very different between the two locations and both required a good amount of hunting around for good compositions.

As compared to fall color in the West, the East has an abundance of red color. The scenes at the lakes, rivers and on the roads were colorful and enchanting. There isn’t much in the way of iconic scenes so it requires some hunting around, but the hunt is part of the fun. In the end, I was very pleased with what I discovered.

Photography Showcasing New Hampshire and West Virginia Landscape Fall Colors

There are many beautiful fall color landscape photography locations in the New Hampshire and West Virginia area such as Shenandoah National Park (established in 1935) with its 311 square miles. The 105 miles long Skyline Drive has stunning panoramic views that photographers love to capture.

Another option: the White Mountains which extend for 87 miles across New Hampshire and into Maine. Another example of this area’s fine art landscape photography is the Glade Creek Grist Mill (of West Virginia) was built in 1976 and has been pictured on calendars and in coffee table books – fall colors make a wonderful backdrop for this weather-beaten mill.

Creating Fall Color Fine Art

Visiting New Hampshire in New England, West Virginia, and other areas in the eastern United States to view Fall color is extremely popular, and for good reason. The weather is pleasant and the colorful scenes are quite uplifting. There is no better way to remember these experiences than with a Fine Art Print for your home.

Visiting and Photographing Fall Color in the Eastern US

Autumn is commonly referred to as the Fall Season and initiates the transition from Summer to Winter. The temperatures are mild and cool, the rainstorms have subsided and it is a wonderful time to be out and about. For Landscape and Nature Photography, the presentation of fall color makes it my favorite time of year to photograph.

It’s always a little bit of a guess when will be the best time for fall color. It varies by location and by year and can depend on the amount of rain there has been. Even in the best of situations, peak fall color may only last a few days. If you guess right, you are well rewarded by the brilliant, warm colors.

New England is famous for its fall color, be it in Maine, Vermont, or the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The Kancamagus Highway, Swift River, and Crawford Notch State Park are great places to see fall color. The Skyline Drive in Virginia is beautiful with red and yellow colors. West Virginia around the New River Gorge is spectacular. You can also check out our Colorado Fall Color photography
