The Western Photography Experience
There is a lot going on at a working horse ranch, which results in thousands of photos being taken with constant action. High-speed shooting is required with the running of the horses in order to capture the perfect moment.
I was somewhat prepared for the constant action at the ranch through my previous wildlife photography experience. This was a little different as things were happening in more than one direction, so my head was on a swivel looking for western ranch scenes to capture.
Western Photography - Facts and Reflections
The Western United States has a special appeal for us with its iconic landscapes and imagery of cowboys, cowgirls, and horses. A photographer has the pleasure of mixing breathtaking vistas with images of men, women, and horses that convey a sense of independence, resilience, and adventure. There is something about the rugged attire, the weathered faces, lassos, saddles, and boots – the combination conveys their deep connection to their lives and lifestyles.
Horses have been an integral part of cowboy culture. Horses were introduced to the American West by the Spanish conquistador during the 16th century. They quickly multiplied and became an integral part of the Native American culture. Horses today symbolize the spirit of the American West. They play an important role in cattle herding; their strength and endurance make it easier for tasks to be performed; and are a reliable means of transportation in the rugged and vast landscape of the West.
The American West is rich in heritage and history – you will find rodeos, country fairs, horse round-ups, large cattle ranches, and wild horses running through a valley. The goal of Western photography is always to bring the spirit of the West to life and encourage the viewer to appreciate the sense of adventure and admiration for both the day-to-day life as well as the rugged landscapes of the United States West.
